Dr. Kimberly Hires (or Dr. Kim as Clients call her) didn't set out to build a consulting firm. She set out to answer a question that would shape the next decade of her career:
What enables people, leaders, and organizations to perform at their best sustainably?
That question led to over a decade of studying the intersection of science, leadership, organizational performance, and human behavior. While her own experience with professional burnout sparked the journey, it ultimately became something much larger: a commitment to understanding the conditions that allow people and organizations to thrive together.
Her career began in biomedical research, studying infectious diseases, immunological disorders, and the biological factors that influence human health. She trained at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institutes of Health, worked as a CDC contractor, published research in international scientific journals, and earned the rank of Clinical Associate Professor at the age of 37. She is also the author of The Leadership Innovation Manifesto.
Over time, her work expanded beyond laboratories, hospitals, and lecture halls into the organizations where people live, work, lead, and perform. Along the way, she recognized that sustainable organizational performance is shaped not only by what we know, but by how people think, lead, adapt, and work together.
Today, that unique journey serves as the foundation for The Human Capacity Advantage™ and The Nightingale Firm's guiding philosophy:
Science. Strategy. Human Capacity.
As a PhD-prepared scientist, Registered Nurse, executive advisor, keynote speaker, educator, and organizational consultant, Dr. Kim brings together perspectives that are rarely found in a single advisor. Science provides the evidence to understand why people and organizations perform the way they do. Strategy transforms that evidence into practical decisions, leadership practices, and organizational action. Human Capacity ensures those strategies can be executed and sustained over time.
Her experience spans healthcare, higher education, government, nonprofit organizations, and Fortune 500 companies. She has coached leaders, advised executive teams, and partnered with organizations whose leaders make high-stakes decisions affecting thousands of employees across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Today, Dr. Kim is the creator of the Human Capacity Advantage™, a signature framework that helps organizations understand a fundamental truth:
Performance begins with capacity.
Through The Nightingale Firm, Dr. Kim partners with leaders and organizations to align science, strategy, and human capacity, helping them move beyond treating symptoms such as burnout, disengagement, turnover, technostress, and change fatigue by strengthening the capacity building conditions that enable people to thrive and sustainable performance to endure.

The Nightingale Firm logo reflects our belief that
Performance Begins with Capacity.
At its center is the nightingale, a bird long associated with resilience, hope, and perseverance. Known for singing through the night, it represents the ability to lead with clarity and purpose even during periods of uncertainty, complexity, and change.
The upward posture symbolizes growth, possibility, and continuous progress. It reflects our commitment to helping leaders, teams, and organizations move beyond short-term performance toward sustainable success.
Surrounding the nightingale is a circular design inspired by both systems thinking and the structure of an atom. Just as atoms form the foundation of the physical world, we believe human capacity is the foundation of sustainable organizational performance. The orbiting elements also reflect the interconnected nature of leaders, teams, systems, and environments reminding us that lasting results emerge when these elements are intentionally aligned rather than managed in isolation.
The design reflects the three principles that guide every engagement:
Science. Strategy. Human Capacity.
Science helps us understand what works.
Strategy provides direction.
Human capacity determines whether people and organizations can execute and sustain meaningful results.
The clean monochromatic design reflects the values that guide our work: clarity, integrity, focus, credibility, and intentionality. We believe meaningful transformation doesn't require unnecessary complexity. It requires understanding what matters most and acting with purpose.
Together, these elements represent the philosophy behind The Nightingale Firm:
Performance Begins with Capacity.
Organizations cannot sustainably outperform the capacity of the people responsible for delivering results.
Our Mission is to help leaders and organizations build the capacity required for sustainable performance through evidence-based advisory, leadership capacity building, and organizational consulting.
Our Vision is a future where organizations no longer choose between people and performance because they recognize that strengthening human capacity is one of the most powerful drivers of organizational success.
Our logo is more than a symbol. It is a visual reminder that when science, strategy, and human capacity align, sustainable performance follows.
Strengthened the human systems that enable organizations to execute strategy by improving leadership effectiveness, workforce capacity, organizational alignment, and employee engagement.
Contributed to leadership readiness supporting the successful retention of a $1 billion client relationship and to secure an additional $1 billion contract through targeted leadership capacity-building initiatives involving fewer than 10% of organizational leaders.
Extended retention of employees identified as high risk for voluntary turnover by an average of 12 months, preserving institutional knowledge and reducing replacement costs.
Helped employees move out of severe burnout on average within one quarter by addressing the individual and organizational conditions contributing to overload, technostress, and diminished performance.
Partnered with executive teams, CHROs, and senior leaders to strengthen organizational effectiveness during periods of transformation and growth including the COVID-19 pandemic.
Designed executive education and leadership development experiences that consistently generated outstanding participant feedback and repeat organizational engagements.
Partnered with a nonprofit executive to realign leadership demands with human capacity. Over six months, the client achieved measurable improvements in well-being, reduced chronic stress, strategically advanced her career, expanded a private practice while maintaining full-time executive responsibilities, and created greater capacity for family, travel, and personal fulfillment.
Partnered with a mid-level leader to develop a long-term executive career strategy, resulting in advancement to a senior executive role, a $100,000 increase in annual compensation within three years, expanded organizational influence, and an improved quality of life with more intentional time for family.
